What is RSS?

RSS feeds are a popular way to gather content from across the web, without requiring you to search for updates yourself. Many news sources offer their frequently-updated content in this XML-based format, allowing you to subscribe to "feeds" of data that are automatically delivered to you. Using RSS feeds allows you to easily stay informed of updated content, and saves you the time of having to visit each site individually.

How can I view RSS feeds?
There are 3 popular ways to view RSS feeds:  web-based news readers, your web-browser itself, or stand-alone feed reader software.

- Web-based news reader - A web-based tool that allows you to gather content from across the web, and create your own personal news webpage. It's like designing your own newspaper, tailored to just the information you are interested in. Since it is web-based, you can access your content from any computer connected to the internet. Popular web-based news readers include MyYahoo!MyAOL, and iGoogle.

- Web browser - All new versions of popular web browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari, have RSS reading capabilities built in. While you are browsing your favorite web pages, look for the orange RSS icon in the browser address bar:

Click on this icon, and the RSS-formatted version of the content will appear. Bookmark these RSS pages to create a library of your favorite news sources.

- Feed reader software - A software program that downloads and organizes new RSS feed content. Because this program lives on your computer, and is not accessible via the internet,  your feeds are only viewable from that computer. Popular feed reader software programs include FeedDemon and Mozilla Sage.
